When Margrave began working in portraits as a young and relatively unknown photographer, the confrontation with her subjects finds a very different kind of image. Giving way to a more direct approach whereby the photographer works at closer range -- much closer, in most instances.
Dispelling the Myths: she developed a unique passion for photography producing innovations especially in portraiture that set her apart stylistically.
The complex relationship between art and commerce is reflected in the balance or counterpoint to the other, and only by looking at the individual significance can the viewer appreciate the cumulative power of Margrave's photography.

The most radical experiments occur in the most recent work where Margrave has scanned her subjects with a moving slit of light during a long exposure time. While the early portraits have about them the gravity, the impassivity, of a realism strictly adhered to, these new ones are expressionistic in nature.

Margrave's portraits always are concerned with character and the ability of a photograph to tell viewers something about the personality of the sitter. At the same time, she is interested in portraits as compositions and even as arrangements of formal design elements ranging from hand gestures to the blocking that shadow and light create.
In a few years, she made a set of pictures -- that many photographers would be glad to claim as a lifetime achievement.
Hollie Margrave's studio evolved with the intention of offering the highest quality of photography and service, combined with a reputation for creativity and style.
The artist graduated with Honors from the Art Institute of Colorado, USA. Already at that early point in her career, Hollie Margrave was recognized for her "Best Portrait Portfolio".
Margrave's love of black and white photography began with her passion for photographing people
Specialising in black & white portraits she quickly gained recognition for her innovative work in capturing peoples relationships, personalities and lifestyles in a unique style.
You will notice when viewing a Hollie Margrave portrait, it is always the personalities within the image that tell the story. Her ability to capture the essence of her subject comes from years of experience in understanding people's sensitivity to being photographed, her meticulous attention to detail, and her passion for the art of photographing people.
Margrave now concentrates on commissioned portraits, and publishing images which will be used on greeting cards, calendars, albums and books internationally.
Currently, Margrave is working on her new Book publication, which will be available for a Christmas 2003 launch.
